Will Rogers College High School senior and JROTC member Samara Markwardt is active in girls’ varsity wrestling, varsity track, and varsity volleyball. Her passion for wrestling led her to the state championship where she took first place in her weight class and made history as Tulsa Public Schools’ first female wrestling champion.
“I’ve grown so much as a person during my years at Rogers and a big part of that positive change has been wrestling. When you’re on the mat and you lose, you can’t blame anyone else. You can’t blame your teammates or your parents or your friends. In wrestling, that loss is your responsibility and that’s similar to everyday life. If you want to improve yourself, it’s up to you to make it happen!”
She says that through JROTC she has learned life skills like leadership and sportsmanship and has an even greater appreciation for America’s veterans.
“We do community outreach events like providing meals for veterans, but there are also competitive events like color guard and drill team. I thrive on competition, so getting to be part of events like that is exciting.”
Samara says two of her teachers, Keli Fritz and Frederick Smitherman, both played a big role in her life throughout middle and high school.
“I’ve known both of them for several years – Mrs. Fritz since freshman year and Mr. Smitherman since 7th grade. They have both watched me grow and have always been honest and open with me and have been a huge encouragement.”
Samara plans to continue wrestling at Carl Albert State College in Poteau where she will study early childhood education to teach and possibly become a counselor. She also plans to volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma.

Samara Markwardt, estudiante de último año de Will Rogers College High School y miembro del JROTC, participa activamente en lucha libre universitaria femenina, atletismo y voleibol universitarios. Su pasión por la lucha libre la llevó al campeonato estatal donde obtuvo el primer lugar en su categoría de peso e hizo historia como la primera campeona femenina de lucha libre de las Escuelas Públicas de Tulsa.
“He crecido tanto como persona durante mis años en Rogers y una gran parte de ese cambio positivo ha sido la lucha libre. Cuando estás en la lona y pierdes, no puedes culpar a nadie más. No puedes culpar a tus compañeros de equipo, a tus padres o a tus amigos. En la lucha, esa batalla perdida es tu responsabilidad y eso es similar a la vida cotidiana. ¡Si quieres mejorar, depende de ti hacerlo realidad!”
Ella dice que a través de JROTC ha aprendido habilidades para la vida como el liderazgo y el espíritu deportivo y tiene un aprecio aún mayor por los veteranos de los Estados Unidos.
“Hacemos eventos de alcance comunitario como proporcionar comidas a los veteranos, pero también hay eventos competitivos como la escolta y el equipo de instrucción. Me gusta la competencia, por lo que ser parte de eventos como ese es emocionante”.
Samara dice que dos de sus maestros, Keli Fritz y Frederick Smitherman, jugaron un papel importante en su vida durante la escuela secundaria y preparatoria.
“Los conozco a ambos desde hace varios años: la Sra. Fritz desde el primer año y el Sr. Smitherman desde el séptimo grado. Ambos me han visto crecer y siempre han sido honestos y abiertos conmigo y han sido un gran estímulo”.
Samara planea continuar luchando en Carl Albert State College en Poteau, donde estudiará educación infantil para enseñar y posiblemente convertirse en consejera. Ella también planea ser voluntaria con Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma.
