Alec Dugin is the 2023-2024 Will Rogers College High School Teacher of the Year!
Alec joined the Rogers team in 2021. He teaches six biology classes, including three AP biology sections.
"I am dedicated to this profession and specifically the school I was placed at. It is also a direct mirror in some ways of the education or community I was raised in. My life could have turned for a whole host of paths that were not rooted in being of service and care to others if it were not for the right people being there to cultivate my being at the right times," said Alec.
"That is my ultimate goal. Even if my students do not recall much about biology, they are thoroughly going to remember the effort and lessons I taught them in turn of living a life they are proud of. I thoroughly enjoy challenging students to think critically about the problems of today through the lens of science and push them to give their best self every single day."
In addition to teaching, Alec serves as the science department lead, Indigenous Students Association advisor, Tulsa Native Youth Board co-adviser, and teacher cabinet representative for high school.
"I am honored to have served as advisor and mentor to our Indigenous youth in our Indigenous club at Rogers. Over the last four years, we hosted, managed, and collaborated for four Native American Heritage Month assemblies, sponsored community cooking events, raised awareness around various Indigenous challenges, and more!"
Outside of the classroom, Alec is an advisor and recruiter for Teach for America Native Alliance and counselor at American Legion Arizona Boys State during the summer.
"I am very passionate about making an impact in the Indigenous community and the country as a whole. Less than 20% of Indigenous peoples pursue higher education, thus, it is imperative to improve outcomes in the realm of health, finances, and education to have positive role models in the classroom who come from similar backgrounds.
"Truly, I am living my best life and being all I can be for the students. The students at Rogers are truly special and deserve the utmost support and encouragement to achieve their wildest dreams. I am proud to be one of their teachers and hope to continue being one in the future too!"
